I know how you feel. I changed careers and worked hard to get
my degree and certifications as I taught computer classes in a
non-public school. I am still teaching computer classes in
non-public school, after 3 years applying to every school
district in a reasonable radius of Southeastern PA. (I am
certified Elementary Ed, Special Ed, Middle School Social
Studies, Business/Computers/Information Technology.) I had one
interview in a charter school, but the money was the same as I
earn now. I love my job, but after all the money for my
education, including my Masters too, I thought I could help my
family better survive the economic situation. That did not
happen. Now, I know I am too old to be considered when my
resume hits the desk of the human resource people. This job
market for teachers is saturated with the young people coming
from colleges. Maybe us career changers should have changed to
something else. I feel as if I made a mistake.

Subbing could help if you get to know the principal and other
administrators, and you stand out as a super teacher; that is
networking. Districts hire their regular subs if you acquire
    that good reputation.

Sorry to be so negative, but in my life I guess I made another
bad choice. But I am educated now. :) Good luck!
