It is difficult, but not impossible to get a job in SE Pa. I
know, because I was hired last year at one of the Intermediate
Units. It is special ed, but I have a contract, unlike some of
the other districts where they string you along as a long term
sub and don't offer you a contract for years. You might want to
consider getting some experience with kids with Autism. There
are a number of private agencies that the school districts
contract with to provide services to kids on the spectrum. Also
when special ed positions do open up in districts often it is
with this population. These students can be difficult to work
with, but also very rewarding. I would also look into becoming
a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Then you could contract
with the districts yourself. The trick is to find an area of
specialty where there is a need. Right now I would say that
area is Autism. The other area where there is a great need
anywhere you go is Speech Pathology. If you haven't done your
masters yet, I would get it in speech.
Good luck!
