When I taught in Phila, it happened if there was no sub BUT they paid
us to do so. Some people made a part time job out of covering for
classes with no sub.

Where I teach now, it rarely happens but it happens and we get paid
as well.

No law against it but look at union contract as to what happens if
they don't give you your prep for the day (if the prep is guaranteed
by your union contract)
