The salary depends on the district you work for. If you work in a
private school, you're not going to make as much money. As far as
the maximum, I am currently working in a district where the maximum
salary is 97,000 a year. I am only 28 years old, and I have been
told that that salary will continue to go up to well over a hundred
thousand by the time I retire. The salaries here in PA are great
and amongst the best in the country. I believe this state ranks in
the top 5 as far as average teacher salary goes.
Many public school districts start their teachers out anywhere
between 40-45,000 with just a bachelors degree. With your level of
experience and graduate school credits, you will be making a lot
more than that (around 70,000) depending on how many years of
actual teaching experience you have. PA's public school salary
structure is based on how long you have been teaching, and how many
credits you've taken and passed at the graduate level.
You must remember that we are one of the only states in the country
that can still strike, and because of that we typically get what we
want when it comes to salary. We also have a great union (one of
the strongest union's in the country) who fight for us and make
sure that we are treated fairly. As far as any deductions from
your paycheck, there are your typical federal taxes, but they also
take 7.5 percent to put towards your retirement pension through
PSERS (excellent retirement) and any union deductions.
It's a great state to teach in, but the last poster was correct in
that it is almost impossible to get a job. I feel very fortunate
that I was able to get in, because there are thousands of people in
this state looking for jobs. Also, because it is so appealing to
teach here, there are plenty of people just like yourself coming
from other states trying to compete for positions. On average, you
might be looking at anywhere from 300-500 applications for one
position! Good Luck! If you can do it, it's definitely a great
place to teach and you will make great money
